Topic:
The Meditation Sutra is one of the triple sutras of the Pure Land tradition on which the Jodo Shinshu teaching is based upon. The background of this sutra is the very famous historical story of the ‘Tragedy of Rajagriha,’ based in the capital of Magada in northeast India, which is the one of the most well known in Buddhist literature. The sutra depicts the process of salvation of Queen Vaidehi who is the heroine of the story, and is, none other than the representative of each of us who carry heavy burdens of karmic conditions, and yet found ultimate freedom through the guidance of Sakyamuni Buddha. The main theme of this sutra is the method of emancipation from samsara and the attainment of birth in the Pure Land.

The course will be taught by Rev. Shigenori Makino.

The textbook used for the study class is called a ‘Translation of the Three Pureland Sutra. Volume 1’ and can be purchased at the Temple office.
